It Was Never Ours to Carry

Letting go is one of the hardest parts of following Jesus. We are so used to holding everything together—fixing, managing, and carrying the weight ourselves. But Scripture reminds us that it was never our role. “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17)
God is the one who sustains all things, not us. Yet many of us still live as if we need to prove we are strong enough or “good enough” before He will step in. But that is not His way. He doesn’t need—or want—His children to prove themselves worthy before offering His help.
His grace is not a paycheck. It’s a gift.
Romans 5:8 tells us, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Before we asked, before we were worthy, before we even believed—He had already given us His love.
This is why Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28) Rest doesn’t come from holding it all together. It doesn’t come from proving ourselves. Rest comes from surrender—giving back to God what was never ours to carry in the first place.
And that surrender isn’t weakness—it’s worship. “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7) When we finally unclench our fists, when we stop striving to be “enough,” we discover the peace and freedom that only comes from trusting the One who has been holding it all together all along.
