We Create Because We Were Created

From the heart of Jessica Kirk
Every time you write a line, hum a melody, plate a meal, or design a room, you echo the very first chapter of Scripture. Creativity isn’t a side-hustle of the soul—it’s part of how we bear God’s image in the world.
(Scripture references provided; brief quotations are from common translations.)
The Image of a Creative God
“In the beginning, God created…” (Genesis 1:1). Before we ever made anything, God made everything—with purpose, beauty, and order. Then He said, “Let us make man in our image” (Genesis 1:26–27). To be human is to reflect the Creator, and one way we reflect Him is by bringing new things into being: ideas, art, systems, businesses, families, songs.
John writes, “All things were made through him” (John 1:3). Creation flows from Christ, the Word, and our creativity—however ordinary it feels—flows from being made by and for Him (Colossians 1:16).
Creativity as Worship
If Jesus is Lord over paint and pixels, chords and choreography, then creativity becomes worship. Paul says, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17; see also 1 Corinthians 10:31). That means spreadsheets and songwriting alike can honor God.
A helpful prayer for makers: “Establish the work of our hands” (Psalm 90:17). Ask God to infuse your process with His presence—not just the final product.
Your Gifts Are for Others
God gives gifts so we can give them away. “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10–11). Romans 12:6–8 lists a range of gifts—teaching, encouraging, leading, showing mercy—reminding us that creativity isn’t limited to “the arts.” It’s any Spirit-led way of building up others.
Scripture even names artisans by name. Bezalel was “filled…with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship” to design the tabernacle (Exodus 31:1–5; 35:30–35). God delights to fill people with skill for holy work—designers, builders, musicians, organizers, and more.
Start Small—God Began with a Word
Creation began with, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). One sentence. One step. Hebrews says the universe was formed “by the word of God” (Hebrews 11:3). If you’re stuck at a blank page or empty canvas, start with one faithful move—one paragraph, one sketch, one riff, one conversation. “Whoever despises the day of small things shall rejoice” (Zechariah 4:10).
Creating in a Broken World
We create in a world that’s not yet whole. That’s why our work can feel frustrating or fragile. But Jesus is making “all things new” (Revelation 21:5). In Christ, you are a “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17), and you’ve been “created in Christ Jesus for good works…that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10). Every faithful act of making—artistic, relational, entrepreneurial—becomes a preview of the restoration to come.
Five Ways to Live This Out This Week
Name your why. In one sentence, write how your current project serves others and honors Christ (Colossians 3:17). Tape it where you work.
Set a tiny target. Choose a 30–60 minute block to make one tangible thing: a verse sketch, a beat, a prototype, a lesson outline (Genesis 1:3; Zechariah 4:10).
Invite feedback. Share a draft with one trusted person and ask, “What serves? What confuses?” (Proverbs 15:22).
Bless someone. Use your gift deliberately for another person this week—compose a prayer, bake a loaf, write a note (1 Peter 4:10).
Close in gratitude. End each session with a short prayer: “Lord, establish the work of my hands” (Psalm 90:17).
Reflection Questions
Where do I most clearly reflect God’s image as a maker right now? (Genesis 1:26–27)
How could I reframe my daily tasks as worship? (Colossians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 10:31)
Who can I serve with my next creative step? (1 Peter 4:10–11)
What’s my “first word” to begin today? (Genesis 1:3; Hebrews 11:3)
A Simple Prayer for Makers
“Creator God, thank You for making me in Your image. Fill me with Your Spirit like You filled Bezalel—with skill, wisdom, and integrity. Help me begin with small, faithful steps, to serve others with whatever I make, and to do it all in the name of Jesus. Establish the work of my hands. Amen.” (Exodus 31:1–5; Psalm 90:17; Colossians 3:17)
